Introduction :
With the separation of the State from Assam in December,1957 the Department inherited what little of the forests then existed in the region and was managed by the Assam Forest Department. To begin with, the Forest administration and development was placed under the charge of Forest Officer with Headquarter at Dimapur. He was looking after the forest administration of the entire State. Subsequently a Director of Forests was posted in early 1963 with Headquarter at Kohima.
During 1979, the Department was re-organised by splitting a single Forest Division into three (3) Territorial Forest Divisions namely, Kohima, Mokokchung and Tuensang. Due to rapid increase in the volume of work, the Department has been recognized as one of the Major Departments of the State and has been placed under the charge of the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests. At present the Department being redesignated as Department of Forest, Ecology, Environment & Wildlife and the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, an officer of Indian Forest Service (IFS) Cadre heads the Department.

Particulars of Organization, Functions and Duties:
1.1. Objective/ purpose the Department

1.2. Mission/vision Statement of the Department:
1. To produce surplus timber by the year 2020.
2. Every family plant at least 1000 trees per family by 2020.
3. Nagas’ economy based on forest produce by 2020.
4. Every Nagas’ family can have one car by 2030 purchased from timber sale.
1.3 Brief history of the Department and context of its formation
Before the partition of the State from Assam the whole State was administered by a Forest Officer with headquarter at Dimapur. Subsequently a Director of Forests was posted in the early part of 1963 with headquarter at Kohima. In 1979, the department was re-organized by splitting the whole of State into three Forest Divisions, namely – Kohima, Mokokchung and Tuensang. Due to the nature and quantum of works, the Forest Department was recognized as a major department.
At present the Department has been re-designated as Department of FEEW and headed by PCCF of IFS.
1.4. Duties of the Department.
1. To carry out the policies and programme of the Government.
2. To educate the people in conservation and preservation of forests so as to protect the global warming and environmental degradation.
3. To collect government revenue from forest produce.
4. To act as custodian of the forest resources and wildlife.
1.5. Main activities/functions of the public authority:
1. Controlling and regulating of forest produce in the State.
2. Collection of royalty and revenue for the State government.
3. Documentation of plant and animal species of the State.
4. Production of NTFP including medicinal plant species.
5. Plantation of commercial and non-commercial timber species,
6. Preservation of Flora and Fauna of the State.
7. Enforcing laws and regulating of Acts and rules pertaining to the Forests.
8. Educating the people on role of forest in preservation of environment.
9. To promote eco-tourism
10. Protection, conservation and management of wildlife and its habitats
